How to Prepare to Speak on Purpose and Captivate Your Audience – Part 1 of a 3-Part Series
If you have ever doubted your ability to be captivating when you speak (networking, speaking on stage, creating a video, or having a one-on-one conversation),
or
If you’ve ever felt nervous about what to say and how to say it to make a difference that brings in more clients, this 3-part series is for you.
It’s important to start with connecting to your purpose and what you really want to create in your business.
My purpose is to help people love the sound of their voice – the way it feels, the way it sounds, and the power it has to create influence in all your marketing.
As a professional singer and stage performer, I’ve brought several skills to the business world to help service-based business owners make a difference when they use their voice.
This led me to create my Empowered Voice Method™
In my method, there are 3 voices you need to Speak on Purpose and Captivate Your Audience.
- Your Spiritual voice – The energy and passion you bring to the conversation when you are connected to your purpose.
- Your Physical voice – How you show up physically to deliver the message.
- Your Mental Voice – The words you choose to use and the structure of your conversation.
The order of these voices is very intentional.
Your Spiritual voice lays the foundation on which your Physical voice and your Mental Voice are then able to thrive. When you are truly grounded in your spiritual voice, you use your body with more success and the words just flow. You never worry about what you are about to say.
The mistake I see people make is that they approach these voices in the wrong order.
First, they decide what topic they want to speak about. Then, they might practice speaking the points out loud and using their physical voice. Finally, they add their energy and hope that it will make an impact.
How do you connect to your Spiritual Voice and your purpose to lay a strong foundation for speaking?
Before I use my voice, I ask myself a series of questions.
- What does my heart want for me as I use my voice today?
This is about going within and taking time to really reflect on what you want. It also helps you tap into ideas you might not have considered because you didn’t slow down enough to listen to yourself.I recently asked myself this question as I was preparing my weekly Live training video. I was struggling with what content to choose. My heart told me to sing. That led me to a creative idea to compare singing to networking. On my video, I ended the training singing a song from my one-woman musical, “Stage Dreams.” (See video here.)
- What core values do I want to bring forward in this conversation?
One of my core values is having fun. I like to have fun on my videos. I like to have fun when I lead my networking meetings. That helps me decide on content and also how I show up energetically.
- How do I want to feel as I use my voice?
Choose one or two words that describe how you want to feel as you connect and communicate with others. Do you want to feel calm, excited, passionate, or grounded? You are more likely to manifest the experience you desire when you are clear about how you want to feel.
- What is the biggest result I would like to create?
Start with the end in mind. When you are clear about the result you want to create, that affects your energy and how you show up. Your Physical and Mental voices also benefit. Don’t just “hope for the best.” Decide what you will manifest in clear and measurable ways.
When you take a few minutes to answer these questions, you set yourself up for success in ways that most speakers and business owners never do, thereby giving you a huge advantage in standing out and becoming captivating in your communication.
